Pazhassi Raja Tomb

The Pazhassi Tomb is where thousands regularly pay homage to the famous Lion of Kerala, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. The tomb was constructed in the place where his body was cremated and is situated on the banks of River Kabani in Mananthavady. In 1996 March this tomb has been converted into a museum and today the museum is one of the centers in the State which attracts historians, researchers, and students from far and wide. The museum also contains Pazhassi Raja’s sword and other information about the cultural history of Kerala. The memorial is managed by the Kerala State Archaeology Department.

Muneeswaran Kunnu

Muneeswaran Hills near Talapuzha under the Begur forest range. While trekking to Muneeswaran hill and through the forest which covers nature inn from three sides. Edakkal Caves

A trip to Edakkal Caves is like a journey into our forgotten past. The caves are two natural rock formations believed to have been formed by a large split in a huge rock. The carvings inside are extremely beautiful. Banasura Dam

Situated about 15 km from Kalpetta, the dam holds a large expanse of water and its picturesque beauty is enhanced by the chain of mountains seen on the backdrop. It is constructed in the Banasura Lake and the nearby mountains are known as Banasura Hills. Legends say that the Asura king of Banasura, (the son of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during every Onam festival) undertook a severe penance on the top of these hills and thus it was named after him. The scenic mountains beckon adventure tourists and the dam site is an ideal starting point for trekking.

 

 

Pookod Lake

Pookode Lake in Wayanad is a freshwater lake near Kalpetta resembling the map of India. Nestled between evergreen forests, surrounded by the Western Ghats, this breathtaking lake captivates every tourist who comes to Wayanad. Pookode Lake (or Pookot Lake), a natural freshwater lake is located in Wayanad district at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level. It is the highest altitude freshwater lake in Kerala, and with an area of 5 hectares, it is the smallest too. Pookode Lake is also the point of origination for the Panamaram River, that flows through the valley to join Kabini River.

Tholpetty Wild Life

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful destination located 20 km east of Mananthavady on the Kodagu Road. The jeep ride here offers brilliant opportunities to view various animal and bird species in their natural habitat. One gets to see herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears and many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies and birds including vultures. Visitors are restricted to the outer tourist zone. It gives one an excellent perspective on how we must strive to conserve these natural wonders.

Thrissillery Temple

A popular pilgrim center in Wayanad, the Thrissilery Shiva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kerala. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva. The temple is linked to the renowned Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad. It is built to unique architectural proportions, has intricate carvings, and provides a calm and composed ambience. You can also see a small shrine of Jala Durga, located in a water body that originates from the Papanashini River near Thirunelli.
